Motherhood by Julia Nusbaum

darkness gathers
at the edges
and day
bleeds into night

the hard season is coming
has come
is already here

floors creak
your body aches
you press up against
the night

hot salt
of tears
sting the corners of your mouth
parched and dry
from so much giving
of your body

the great mystery
of the universe is this:
how we go on loving
day after day
when all our wells
run dry
